Dodge & Counter

Untitled Boxing Game Dodge and Counter Guide โ€” Read, Slip, Punish

Blocking is the worst defense in Untitled Boxing Game. It works โ€” that's the trap. Hold the guard and you still eat regenerable damage, still get your block broken, still lose the round on points you never agreed to pay. The players who climb are the ones who stopped blocking and started reading: the dodge that makes a punch miss entirely, the counter that punishes the punch the moment it's promised. This page is the full dossier on both โ€” inputs, timings, every hidden number the UI never shows you, cross-checked between the official game page and the community wiki record.

How Dodging Works: I-Frames and Direction

Press Space (or your dodge binding โ€” full list on our controls page) and your fighter dashes with invincibility frames. Any punch that lands inside those frames misses. Zero damage, no block chip, nothing.

Direction is the part most new players miss: you dodge toward whatever direction you're holding, and if that direction is into the opponent's punch, you slide straight through it. Dodging into an attack looks wrong for about a week and then becomes the only way you'll ever play โ€” slipping a jab by moving through it is the single most reliable defensive action in the game.

The Perfect Dodge: Five Seconds of Free Punches

A perfect dodge is the premium version of the above โ€” pull one off and the opponent is left wide open for roughly five seconds. That's the reward. Here's what the game doesn't print on any screen:

  • Perfect dodges have a hidden cooldown of about eight seconds. The UI shows nothing. Chain attempts inside that window and you get a normal dodge at best.
  • There's a hidden activity meter underneath every perfect dodge. Staying active โ€” throwing punches, using moves โ€” pushes your chance toward 100%. Standing still or slowly walking drains it to 0% in about six seconds. This is why passive players "can't dodge anything": the game has quietly turned their perfect dodge off.
  • They cost real stamina, varying by fighting style, and spamming consecutive attempts burns the bar fast.

The lesson hidden in those three bullets: perfect dodges reward aggression. You can't turtle your way to them. Keep punching, and the escape window stays open; stop punching, and it closes on its own.

Practicing Against Hitman

The community wiki's own training advice is worth adopting wholesale: watch the opponent's M1 speed to time your dodge, and use Hitman players as your practice dummies. Hitman's famously fast jabs are the hardest timing test in the game โ€” if you can slip those, every other style's punches arrive in slow motion by comparison. One session of dedicated Hitman dodging teaches more than a week of casual play.

The Dash Variants

A recent update quietly doubled the dash toolkit:

  • The enhanced front dash. When the opponent commits to any action โ€” punching, backdashing, anything โ€” your forward dash nearly doubles in distance. It's the game's official answer to runners: they blink, you're already inside.
  • The backdash split into two forms. Backdash while the opponent is idle and you travel far with heavy endlag โ€” get chased down during it and you're a sitting duck for M1 strings. Backdash while they're attacking and you hop a short distance with almost no endlag, which sets up a punish if your reactions are sharp.

Knowing which backdash you're getting is a read in itself: the game picks the form based on what the opponent is doing at the moment you press.

Backdash Degradation: The Running Tax

Run away in Untitled Boxing Game and the game starts taking your legs. Every backdash adds 20 points of degradation, stacking in three stages:

  • Stage 1 (20 points): your next backdash loses distance and i-frames
  • Stage 2 (40 points): weakened further
  • Stage 3 (60+): weakest yet โ€” and you can no longer dodge feints at all

The way out is beautifully aggressive: every starter M1 or M2 you land removes 6 points. Defense in this game isn't a stance, it's a ledger โ€” fight to stay solvent, run and you go bankrupt. Our full mechanics guide covers how this interacts with feints and stamina.

How Countering Works

A counter is the other half of the punishment system. Every attack in the game telegraphs itself with a highlight โ€” the glow you see before a punch lands. Hit an opponent during their highlight and their incoming attack fails while they take increased damage.

The standard counter multiplier is 1.25x. Some styles run different numbers: Counter and Hands Low are built around it, Freedom in Whirlwind mode and Chronos modify it, and Hawk's 1.6x is the only published figure in that group โ€” the wiki documents the exception list without publishing every number, and we won't invent the ones that aren't public.

The mental shift: a counter is not a reaction, it's a read. You're not responding to the punch โ€” you're responding to the promise of the punch, which exists the instant the highlight appears. Players who counter well look like they have inhuman reactions. They don't. They just answered the telegraph instead of the attack.

Counter or Perfect Dodge: Which One Are You?

The two defensive payoffs suit different kinds of players:

  • The counter is for readers. It fires on your offense โ€” you punch into their telegraph โ€” so it suits players who like to press forward and guess.
  • The perfect dodge is for timers. It fires on your defense โ€” you slip the punch โ€” so it suits players with sharp reactions who like to let the opponent overcommit first.

Neither is better. The very best players in Untitled Boxing Game use both, and the styles that modify counter damage (Hawk above all) turn a defensive habit into the whole game plan.

Dual Counters and the Ultimate Exception

Hit each other at the exact same moment and you get a dual counter: both sides' attacks fail, both sides take the increased damage, each calculated with their own style's multiplier. It's rarer than it sounds because the window is a single frame of mutual commitment.

One clean exception: ultimates cannot trigger a dual counter. An ultimate landing against a normal punch is not a trade โ€” check our mechanics guide for how ultimate charge and damage actually work.

Reading Highlights: The Tell System

Everything above depends on reading the highlight glows, so learn the language: red is the default (changeable in settings), bright blue always means an ultimate, a full-body glow means a heavy, and a thin outline means a light punch. Three answers exist โ€” counter, block, dodge โ€” and this page exists because two of them are simply better than the third.

One style breaks the whole system: Ghost removes opponents' highlights entirely or partially depending on the attack. Fighting Ghost means fighting blind โ€” no tells, no telegraphs, just pattern reading. It's the hardest matchup for dodge-and-counter players and a big part of why the style ranks where it does on our tier list.

FAQ

How do you dodge in Untitled Boxing Game?Press Space (PC default) or your platform's dodge binding, holding the direction you want to travel. Dodge into the opponent's punch to slip through it โ€” punches that land inside your i-frames miss completely.

What is a perfect dodge?A dodge that leaves the opponent open for about five seconds. Perfect dodges carry a hidden ~8 second cooldown, cost stamina, and depend on a hidden activity meter: keep punching to keep your chance near 100%, stand still and it drains to zero in ~6 seconds.

Why did my dodge fail?Three hidden causes: you were inside the ~8 second perfect dodge cooldown, your activity meter had drained to zero from inactivity, or backdash degradation (60+ points) had weakened your escapes. Land starter punches to shed 6 points of degradation each.

How does counter damage work?Hit an opponent during their highlight telegraph: their attack fails and yours deals bonus damage โ€” 1.25x for most styles. Counter, Hands Low, Hawk (1.6x, the only published figure), Freedom in Whirlwind mode and Chronos run their own multipliers.

What's the best way to practice dodging?Fight Hitman players. The community wiki's standing advice: watch M1 speed to time your dodge, and use Hitman's famously fast jabs as the benchmark โ€” everything else feels slow afterward.
